![]() Defining EMR/EHRTypically when people here the terms electronic medical record (EMR) and electronic health record (EHR) they may think there is no difference between the two terms. This is not the case. While the two share a common goal they are two seperate tools that rely on each other to reach their full potential. The National Alliance for Health Information Technology (NAHIT) has established working definitions for EMR and EHR to help people delineate these tools. Electronic Medical Record (EMR)According to NAHIT an electronic record of health-related information on an individual that can be created, gathered, managed, and consulted by authorized clinicians and staff within one health care organization. EMR data is the record of what happened to a patient during a visit or stay within a health care organization. Electronic Health Record (EHR)The NAHIT has defined an electronic health record as an electronic record of health-related information on an individual that conforms to nationally recognized interoperability standards and that can be created, managed, and consulted by authorized clinicians and staff across more than one health care organization.
